- Feb 23, 12Dorian and I have been busy packing because... WE BOUGHT A HOUSE!We move in on Saturday. We are just A BIT excited. It is a charming two story house with a brick exterior, large trees, a country kitchen, and a fire pit in the back yard. One of my favorite features of the new house is the wood burning fireplace in the living room. We have said from the start that we need to make s'mores in it. Today on Nate Berkus chef George Duran made a few variations on the classic that I can't wait to try in our new kitchen:S'mores CookiesIngredients:1 1/2 cups all purpose flour1 cup graham crackers crumbs1 teaspoon baking soda1 teaspoon salt1/8 tsp. cinnamon2 sticks butter, softened1 cup sugar1/2 cup brown sugar1 tsp. vanilla extract2 eggs2 cups mini chocolate chips1 1/2 cups mini marshmallows2 Hershey bars, coarsely choppedDirections:Preheat oven to 375 degrees.In a medium bowl combine the flour, graham cracker crumbs, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. In a second larger bowl beat together the butter, sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract until creamy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Slowly beat in the flour mixture until smooth. Stir in the chocolate chips. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased cookie sheet.Bake for 8 minutes, and remove from the oven. Push 3 to 4 marshmallows and a few pieces of hershey bar into each cookies. Return to the oven and bake an additional 3-4 minutes until fully cooked. Cool cookies on a wire rack.Makes approximately 4 dozen cookies.Nacho Mama's S'moresIngredients:1 (14-ounce) package of graham crackers3 (5-ounce) milk chocolate bars½ of a 10-.5 ounce bag of mini marshmallowsDirections:Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Break the graham crackers into pieces and place one-third of them in a layer in an ovenproof skillet or pie plate. Break up the chocolate bars and arrange one third of them on top of the crackers. Add one third of the marshmallows. Repeat layers twice. Bake for 5-8 minutes or until the marshmallows are light golden and the chocolate is melted.

I used a photo of my great grandmother and namesake for the oval necklace, a baby photo of Dorian for the round necklace, and a photo of my mom and me as a baby for the large oval necklace.

- Dec 10, 11I hope you are all enjoying the holiday season! We have had several parties in the last couple weeks. Here are a few shots of the decorations in our home. We bought the sock monkeys on our honeymoon in Maui, and Dorian gave me the birds wearing scarves this year. We exchange ornaments with each other every year when we put up the tree.This weekend we are celebrating the season with my family. We'll make gingerbread houses, tour light displays, sip hot chocolate and listen to the Boney M. Christmas album. Then on Friday Dorian and I will be heading to HAWAII to spend Christmas with his family. To say we are excited is the understatement of the year!Making it Lovely is one of my favourite blogs and Nicole posted about this family's Christmas videos today. They are incredibly creative and I admire the vintage flair.

Here are some pictures of my new photo charm bracelets. They are now for sale in my shop. You can have 4-8 charms, and they can be single or double sided. I made up two bracelets as examples. A six charm bracelet using some of my baby photos and a four charm bracelet using our wedding pictures. I'll also be listing three different necklace designs in the next few days. - Nov 07, 11Saturday I was part of the Airdrie Christmas Show hosted by the Airdrie Farmer's Market. It was packed! I want to thank everyone that came out. I enjoyed meeting all of you!Saturday gave me the opportunity to introduce my new collection of personalized photo jewellery. You can now order charm bracelets and necklaces featuring your favorite family photos. The bracelets are now listed in my shop, and the necklaces will be added in the next few days.I've also created several new themed charm bracelets in the last month which will also be added to my shop in time for Christmas. Normally at shows I hang bracelets from a spinner by their tags, but this time I laid several on a white platter. It didn't look as nice, but people could see them better. Adding "London", "Paris" and "Travel" to the tags also made the themes of the bracelets more visible.Next up I am doing a couple of "jewellery parties" hosted by my friends Jenn and Brenda. They make it easy for women to do some Christmas shopping, and I love the chance to interact with customers face to face!

The last two weeks I have been selling my jewellery at The Airdrie Farmer's Market. I have enjoyed chatting with the other vendors and getting to know some people from the community. Plus it makes it easy to grab a ton of fresh veggies! - Sep 16, 11To celebrate our first wedding anniversary, Dorian and I spent last weekend in the mountains. We are lucky to have Banff only an hour from Calgary. It's the perfect place to go for a weekend getaway. Saturday we went for a casual dinner at The Grizzly Paw Brewing Company in Canmore. Sunday we wandered Banff's shops while sipping iced coffees. Spending time in the mountains always leaves me feeling refreshed. It was the perfect weekend.
- Sep 12, 11One year ago today I married the most wonderful man. He's kind, supportive, generous, devoted, funny and loving. I am incredibly lucky Dorian chose me to be his wife. - Sep 08, 11I found this extender slip tutorial via Pinterest (are you on Pinterest yet?) and knew instantly I needed to make one. I have several dresses and skirts that are too short and I end up adding leggings or not wearing them at all. I had trouble finding trim like she used, so I improvised. I chose two complimenting eyelet lace trims and layered them. I bought my slip at Wal-Mart, so I could choose my proper size and not have to alter a vintage slip. I am thrilled with the final result!
- Sep 10, 11Last weekend I went on an all girls camping trip with my friend Brenda and her friend Chelsea. We had a great time! I have been to Montana several times, but never to Whitefish. It was full of charm and friendly locals. I spent my time reading, napping and swimming.Our second night Brenda had a craving for Chinese food. Not a normal camping meal, but it was delicious.Before we left, our husbands had a few "concerns". Dorian was skeptical we could build a fire on our own. Brenda's husband Devon was worried we would have trouble setting up our tent. We took photos to prove we had no trouble! We had s'mores every night. Have you tried making a s'more with Caramilk bars or Reese's Peanut Butter Cups? Amazing. I love the picture of Chelsea and Brenda on their phones while sitting by the fire. Both campgrounds we stayed at had wifi. Camping in the 21st century!This photo is from the second campground we stayed at which was outside of Great Falls. We were amazed at all of the thoughtful touches the owners made to make people feel welcome. There was an outdoor kitchen, pool with water slides and hot tubs, fruit trees and vegetable gardens we could help ourselves to, even free firewood. I love camping and this trip was the perfect way to end the summer.
- Aug 25, 11Monday, August 15th was my 27th birthday. My family and friends really made me feel special this year. Dorian surprised me with these beautiful roses (pink my favorite) two days early. My brother Ryan, his wife Robyn and their son Grayson came from Brooks for the weekend. We loved having them stay with us for a few days. Grayson had a great time throwing balls up and down our stairs, and pushing our dining room chairs around. Not sure why he found that so entertaining, but it cracked us up.We taught Ryan and Robyn how to play Ticket to Ride, one of our favorite board games. Ryan won by a long shot (beginner's luck!). Sunday evening my family got together at my brother Travis and his wife Anne's house. We had pizza, ice cream cake, and played with the kids.The morning of my birthday I met up with my friends Brenda and Jenn for a pedicure. We met in Starbucks first and the barista overheard it was my birthday and gave me my drink for free! How nice is that?After the pedicures we had Vietnamese for lunch. Quynh in Sunridge has the most delicious vegetable spring rolls. They also shred the tofu which is my favorite.I got several lovely gifts. Dorian's sister Lindsey gave me this decorative box and glasses case.My in-laws Rita and Gene gave me this cute cupcake apron and oven mitt set as well as a wallet, lip gloss, and a gift card for Old Navy.Dorian gave me this gorgeous quilt from Anthropologie. Also fabric push pins, ceramic fridge magnets, and a bird money bank. I was thrilled with all of it. He knows me so well!Later in the week my mom came for a visit. I love my mom so much. We did some shopping, chatted at Starbucks, and swapped recipes. I had a mocha coconut frappuccino with a white chocolate macadamia nut cookie. A treat to tide me over until our trip to Hawaii in December.Last Friday we had dinner at Diner Duluxe with our friends Quan and Christina. Whenever I get to choose the place, we go there. I feel at home with the retro decor and the food is fantastic. I ordered the Buckwheat Muesli Pancakes with Maple Squash Butter. They're EPIC. Quan and Christina were so kind to give me a Starbucks gift card. I'm already putting it to good use!
- Aug 05, 11The Dechants have become huge fans of roller derby! We are incredibly proud of Lindsey (Dorian's sister) for joining the Oil City Derby Girls. She made their B Travel Team, The Oil City Tank'er Girls a few months ago. Her derby name is Wreck'er Ya, and she plays the position of blocker. It has been amazing seeing her grow in skill, confidence, and passion for the sport. If you live in Alberta, I encourage you to come to a bout. You can see OCDG's schedule of events here.
- Aug 03, 11Last weekend Dorian and I traveled to his hometown of Fairview to visit his family. It's a small town of about 3,000 people nestled among sprawling fields of canola, green valleys, and clusters of birch trees.A road trip isn't complete without plenty of coffee.Saturday rainy weather forced us to cut our campfire short. My mother-in-law Rita came up with this great idea. They tasted just as good!We used Caramilk bars instead of plain milk chocolate. Yum!Some of Rita's lovely flowers.Canola.Dorian's parents are avid golfers. They live within walking distance of the local golf club. It felt peaceful and idealic. Nice break from city life.
- Jul 31, 11I just added several new pieces to my Etsy shop. The brass stud earrings are a new style for me. I have started making similar pendants as well, which I will post soon. The brooches/pins are also a new product. My favorite is the Brass Paris Brooch with the poodle. I have more pieces to photograph and then I will add them to my shop in the next few weeks.
- Jul 24, 11This weekend we had a second yard sale. The first one we held was ruined by rain, but thankfully this weekend the sun has decided to shine. When Dorian and I got married and moved in together, we felt overwhelmed with the amount of stuff we had. We knew this summer we would have to throw a HUGE yard sale. I spent several hours sorting through books, CDs, childhood toys, old electronics, shoes, and kitchen wares. Several people who stopped by said we had the best sale in town. Success! We managed to sell all of the big items (desk, coffee table, TV, chair) and only a few small items are left. Tomorrow I plan to drop them off at goodwill, and we will be left with some free space!
- Jul 19, 11Me wearing my Gryffindor scarf for the movie (you can buy one here).Sunday night a group of us went to see the final Harry Potter film. I feel a sense of loss knowing it was the last one. I definitely shed a few tears. In the spirit of Harry Potter, I thought I would share some photos from our trip to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. We went to Florida last December for my friend Bonnie's wedding, and visited Universal Orlando while we were there.Entering Hogsmeade.One of my favorite spots was Honeydukes. We bought some Every Flavour Beans, a Chocolate Frog, Pumpkin Juice and some lemon candies in a Honeydukes jar.We had lunch at the Three Broomsticks. I had a bowl of creamy potato and leek soup with a glass of pumpkin juice. I wish I could eat there every week!The Hogwarts Express.Zonko's.Hogwarts. Isn't it beautiful?Dorian enjoying some delicious butterbeer. I have been trying different recipes hoping to recreate it.I hate to use the word "magical" to describe our visit to Hogsmeade, but it truly felt that way. Moaning Myrtle haunted the ladies' toilet, dozens of owls sat in the rafters next to the Owl Post, you could even purchase your very own wand from Ollivander's (I chose a replica of Ginny's wand). That morning I almost believed the world of Harry Potter was real.
- Jul 05, 11Hope you all had a relaxing holiday weekend. We celebrated Canada Day on Friday with a party at our house. I made pulled pork with vegetable kabobs (I apologize for forgetting to snap a photo), and we had maple walnut frozen yogurt for dessert. As the sun set, we headed over to East Lake Park in Airdrie to watch the fireworks. It was the perfect ending to a laid back Canada Day.

Loved it!I had such a fantastic time visiting Katie. I only took a few photos, I was more focused on enjoying my trip than capturing it. Her son Carson is the sweetest little boy. We spent afternoons at the park, shopping for toys, having play dates and going for coffee. I hope our next visit is sooner rather than later.
- May 14, 11Last Thursday Katie and I drove north to tour George Washington's estate Mount Vernon. It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon. Perfect weather for admiring the gardens. I love the smell here. Every time we walk outside I take a deep breath and say "It smells so FRESH here!". Katie figures it's the honeysuckle that I smell. My favorite part of the property is the view from the house of the Potomac River. I was wishing I had a wide angle lens to capture the expansive view. After we toured the house, we wandered through the gardens, stopped to say hello to Martha Washington and then had dinner. We feasted on fried green tomatoes, peanut and chestnut soup with sweet tea. - May 08, 11Only two days until I leave for Richmond, Virginia. I am so excited to spend two whole weeks with my dear friend Katie. Virginia is such a special place to me. This will be my fourth trip to the state. Above are some photos from our spring 2009 adventures. One of my favorite day trips we took then was to see Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. Growing up I loved watching America's Castles with my parents, and when Katie mentioned it was near Richmond and we could tour it, I almost fell off my chair! She was surprised I even knew what it was, ha ha. We also made a trip to Colonial Williamsburg (a childhood dream of mine) and several other historic plantations. I can't wait to arrive in Richmond and to give Katie a huge hug. This trip will be extra special because it is the first time I will meet her son Carson. He is already one year old! I'm looking forward to getting to know him. - May 08, 11Did you watch the Royal Wedding? I admit I taped it and watched it later in the day, but I was still really excited. My friend Brenda came over and we nibbled on some British delights as we swooned over the nuptials. We had cranberry and blueberry scones, cucumber sandwiches, caramel chocolate digestives, wine gums and Earl Grey tea. I loved the classic beauty of Kate's gown, the stolen glances, the carriage rides and all of the fabulous hats!{All photos by Kathryn Dechant}
- May 04, 11Here are a few photos from the craft fair I was part of last weekend. My favorite new thing is the green birdcage. I picked it up at Homesense and then added some brass upholstery tacks to hang necklaces from. I also created some rings and pins, which is a first for me (they will be in my Etsy shop soon). My sister-in-law Lindsey was visiting for the weekend, and she helped me make gift tags for all my bags. The hot air balloon stamp was may favorite! Craft fairs are a ton of work and I am so thankful for my husband Dorian and all his help. He gets up early on his day off to help me set up and brings me coffee. Definitely makes things go more smoothly!

- Kathryn Dechant
A bona fide shopaholic for more than a decade, Kathryn was tired of searching for jewellery that did not seem to exist. With her family and friend’s encouragement, she began playing with various materials. The focus was to make pieces she would want to wear herself. A few months later, Kathryn launched The Kat’s Meow in 2008.
With her perfectionist eye, each piece is meticulously handcrafted. Kathryn hopes her jewellery inspires the wearer to feel graceful and beautiful.
